History and Development
On June 10, 1033, the Marquis Adalberto and his wife Adelasia transferred extensive lands to the Benedictine abbey of San Maria di Castiglione near Parma. These areas, including Parodi, were characterized by swamps at the time. The Benedictines cleared the land, diverted the waters of the Albedosa River, and built the monastery, which was dedicated to Saint Remigius.
Over the centuries, the monastery experienced various phases of growth and decline. In the 12th century, it became independent from the Abbey of San Maria di Castiglione and directly answered to the Pope. In the 14th century, relations with Genoa intensified, leading to conflicts with other dioceses. In the 16th century, the monastery was elevated to a parish, and in the 19th century, it underwent a phase of expansion and renovation.
Architecture and Structure
The church of the abbey consists of three naves, with the central nave wider than the two side naves, separated by cross pillars. The original structure was expanded in the 19th century to meet the growing needs of the community. The central dome covering the presbytery is elliptical and crowned by a lantern. The apse is semi-circular and houses an altar flanked by two sacristies.
Current Use
After years of decay, the abbey was transferred from the Diocese of Genoa to the municipality of Parodi Ligure in 1984. Since 2010, the building has been used for various cultural events, including concerts, art exhibitions, and theater performances. The abbey now serves as a cultural center and is a significant attraction for visitors interested in the history and culture of the region.
